Blood Flow Restriction Training
Blood Flow Restriction Training has been proven to be a safe and effective way to optimize muscle size and strength. BFR involves application of a cuff-like tourniquet to the proximal arms or legs. When the cuff is inflated, there is a reduction in the blood pumped back to the heart from the occluded limb. The resulting increased demand for oxygen means that the muscles have to work much harder than usual to produce a contraction. While BFR increases the amount of stress placed on the muscles, it does not load the joints with additional stress. This makes BFR an ideal training modality for:
In-Season Athletes who want to maintain muscle strength and aerobic fitness
Individuals with knee, hip or shoulder osteoarthritis whose pain may inhibit their
ability to progress with traditional strength training programs
Individuals who wish to improve bone density
Individuals who are looking for a new component to their general fitness program
Blood flow resistance training has been used successfully in the military and pro sports settings, as well as in hospitals and rehabilitative settings throughout the world, to improve aerobic capacity, improve recovery, and increase muscle size and strength.
I am happy to supplement your normal independent fitness routine with BFR-focused training sessions, or build it into the strength and conditioning program I design for you.
*Blood flow restriction training is contraindicated for those with certain medical conditions. If you are interested in BFR, we will determine during a thorough medical history if it is appropriate for you. If there are any concerns, I will ask you to get clearance from your doctor before beginning this type of training.
